Urban Farm :: Eagle Street Rooftop Farm

On the shoreline of the East River and with a sweeping view of the Manhattan skyline, Eagle Street Rooftop Farm is a 6,000 square foot green roof organic vegetable farm located atop a warehouse rooftop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I luckily live only 5 blocks away from this fantastic farm.

All during the month of August at the farm, they have had chefs coming in to do cooking demonstrations. This time the lovely couple from Van Leeuwen Ice Cream was there to do a demo of a fish curry dish they learned on a trip to Bali. Their ice cream is fantastic, they scout out top notch ingredients with no junk put in. Just pure delicious ice cream made the right way. Within the two years of their business they now have 5 trucks in NYC and a shop in Greenpoint. They offer rare and exotic flavors such as earl grey, sugar palm, gianduja, red currant, ginger, coffee, pistachio & hazelnut to name a few. They were super sweet people and the food fantastic.

Eagle Street Rooftop Farm sells in a small stand right off the roof, as well as to local restaurants around the neighborhood such as Anella, Eat, Marlow & Sons, Paulie Gee's and Vesta. All of which I have personally ate at and are all fantastic restaurants. The farm is also affiliated with Growing Chefs, a farm to fork education group.

Growing Chefs Philosphy

Since 2005, Growing Chefs has maintained a simple philosophy: "broccoli is not boring!" As agriculturalists and educators, we teach that to eat well from field to fork is to stewart good soil, celebrate the genetic diversity of seeds, practice organic agriculture in growing food, eat well-balanced, fresh, hand-cooked meals among friends; and to compost. We think all eaters should be know where their food comes from and how to grow it. All our educators share the same enthusiasm and curiosity as their students exploring the garden and the kitchen. We grow with, and for, the generations after us. And we love good food.

I had a great time and truly loved being around the awesome people I met that day. You must check it out!

Check out their WEBSITE and CALENDER for list of events.
